Update about COVID-19 School Building Closures

This afternoon, State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister shared her intention to recommend to the Oklahoma State Board of Education that our state implement a continuous learning plan without reopening school buildings. This means that, if approved by the state board, instruction of students would resume remotely on April 6 and that our school buildings will NOT reopen this year.

We anticipate that the Oklahoma State Board of Education will consider and take action on this recommendation on Wednesday, March 25. The Oklahoma State Department of Education and Superintendent Hofmeister have already suspended state testing for the 2019–2020 school year and will ensure that student absences related to COVID-19 will not impact a child’s future opportunities.

We care about every single one of you – our students, our team, our families. We love you, and we want you to be safe and healthy. We recognize the enormity of Superintendent Hofmeister’s recommendation, and we have been working urgently over the last week to put plans in place to support students and families through a longer closure. While we are still working through a number of issues, we want Tulsa families to know that, in the very likely event of a longer closure:

  • We will continue to provide breakfast and lunch meals to our students; and
  • Our school leaders and teachers will have plans in place to support student learning and engagement after April 6.

This is an unprecedented situation, and it is changing rapidly. We know that our team, students, and families have many questions. In particular, we know that our high school juniors and seniors are making post-secondary plans and need to understand what will happen next. Know that we hear your concerns and questions and that the district and your school will stay in close contact with you to address them. We are also working on a set of frequently asked questions for our high school juniors and seniors. Please don’t hesitate to raise your concerns directly to your school’s leadership team as well.

We know that the uncertainty of this situation - especially when combined with this unprecedented experience - can be difficult and scary for all of us. Our commitment to you is to continue to share what we know for certain as soon as we know it, to answer your questions and address your concerns to the best of our ability, and to do all that we can to support everyone in our city as we make our way through this challenging time.
